An Evening with Paul Anka at Sunrise Theatre – February 24, 2013

An Evening With
Paul Anka
Sunday, February 24 at 7pm, Tickets: $95/85

Paul Anka, one of the greatest songwriters in history, will be returning to the Sunrise Theatre in February, 2013. Don’t miss this amazing opportunity to witness the extraordinary talent who has been delighting audiences around the world for 40 years.

Raised in Ottawa, Ontario, Paul Anka started writing songs at an early age, but it was a trip to New York that was to change his life forever when he wrote a song called “Diana” for a girl he knew. This song launched his career as an international teen idol at the age of sixteen and sold over 20 million copies worldwide.

By the time Anka was 18; he had five Top-20 hits and had secured himself a distinguished musical niche of romance. Who can forget his famous hits “Put Your Head on My Shoulder,” “You Are My Destiny,” “Lonely Boy” and “Puppy Love”… performed by some of the greatest names in the entertainment industry including Sinatra, Presley, Barbara Streisand, Buddy Holly, Tom Jones, etc.

Besides writing well-known pieces of music for TV and film, Anka topped the charts in the 70s with hits: “(You’re) Having My Baby,” “I Don’t Like To Sleep Alone” and “One-Man Woman.” Of course, Anka is probably best known for his song “My Way” which topped the charts by Frank Sinatra and later by Elvis Presley; and unknown to many, Anka co-wrote Michael Jackson’s posthumous #1 worldwide hit, “This Is It,” further cementing his place in history as one of the most prolific and versatile songwriters of any generation.

It is a rare privilege and honor for us to have this extraordinary talent back again to Sunrise Theatre. Don’t miss Paul Anka on February 24th at 7:00pm.

An Evening with Tony Bennett at Sunrise Theatre – March 3, 2013

An Evening With
Tony Bennett
Sunday, March 3 at 7pm, Tickets: $125/95

In the 1950s, thousands of screaming bobbysoxers surrounded the Paramount Theatre in New York, held back only by police barricades, to see their singing idol Tony Bennett. Today those fans, as well as their children and grandchildren, continue to idolize the octogenarian, and all of Bennett’s fans will be able to see him LIVE, at the Sunrise Theatre.

Tony’s big break came in 1949 when comedian Bob Hope noticed him working with Pearl Bailey in Greenwich Village. As he recalls, “Bob Hope came down to check out my act. He liked my singing so much that after the show he came back to see me in my dressing room and said, ‘Come on kid, you’re going to come to the Paramount and sing with me.’ But first he told me he didn’t care for my stage name (Joe Bari) and asked me what my real name was. I told him, ‘My name is Anthony Dominick Benedetto,’ and he said, ‘We’ll call you Tony Bennett.’ And that’s how it happened. A new Americanized name, the start of a wonderful career and a glorious adventure that has continued for over sixty years.”

His initial fame came via a string of Columbia singles in the early 1950s, including such chart-toppers as “Because of You,” “Rags To Riches” and a cover of Hank Williams’ “Cold, Cold Heart.” He has placed two-dozen songs in the Top 40, including “I Wanna Be Around,” “The Good Life,” “Who Can I Turn To (When Nobody Needs Me)” and his signature hit, “I Left My Heart In San Francisco,” which earned him two Grammy Awards.

Tony Bennett is one of a handful of artists to have new albums chart in the 1950s, ’60s, ’70s, ’80s, ’90s, and to this day. He has toured the world to sold out audiences, winning rave reviews whenever he performs. In 2006, Tony’s NBC prime-time special, “Tony Bennett: An American Classic” received 7 Emmy Awards making it the most honored program of that year. With worldwide record sales in the millions, dozens of platinum and gold albums to his credit, fifteen Grammy Awards including the prestigious Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, Tony Bennett will surely give you a night to remember …only at the Sunrise Theatre.

The Sunrise Theatre directly benefits the economy and quality of life in St. Lucie County by attracting visitors from other cities, counties and states. Also located within the theatre complex is the 220-seat Black Box Theatre, a state-of-the-art venue offering a variety of national, regional and local programming.

The Black Box is home to the Ft Pierce Jazz and Blues Society’s Jazz Jams every Tuesday night (Tickets only $5) and the home of “The Comedy Corner” (from the owners of the Improv) bringing top-touring comedians every 2nd & 4th Saturday night of each month (Tickets only $15). The Sunrise Theatre truly is the crowning gem in the cultural crown of the Treasure Coast.

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Sunrise opened its doors on August 1, 1923 as the largest theatre on Florida’s East Coast between Jacksonville and Miami. It quickly became the center of all St. Lucie County’s cultural activities. The theatre closed its doors on September 8, 1983 , due to the decline of the downtown area and a refusal to convert to multi-screen operation. In 1988, Main Street Fort Pierce was established and soon realized the need for the Sunrise Theatre as a center for local, national and international world class performing arts presentations.

Main Street Fort Pierce began an effort to save the historic theatre. In 1997, the Sunrise Theatre was purchased by the St. Lucie Preservation Association, Inc. and today, after reopening on January 6, 2006, the theatre is completely renovated to its original splendor with state-of-the-art sound and lighting systems and is owned and operated by the City of Fort Pierce.
